DOWNTOWN. Set in the renovated Rieger Hotel and taking over space once devoted to sketchy saloons, 1924 Main is a wonderful tribute to exceptional dining. Chef-owner Rob Dalzell promotes prix fixe, seasonal menus that highlight the best local produce, meats, and seafood. They change monthly and feature dishes like cedar plank-roasted salmon with chorizo and lentils, duck confit raviolis, and beef rib-eye with root vegetable and chestnut hash. A terrific bar is available, and practiced servers only add to the appeal. Wine pairings are available.

BROOKSIDE. Featuring a coffee bar for sleepy morning customers and a cheerful, rustic dining room for later in the day, Aixois is fast becoming a Brookside mainstay. Classic French dishes, simply prepared, form the backbone of the dinner menu. Start with classic hors d'oeuvres ­ mussels cooked with wine, herbs, and shallots, or snails in garlic, parsley, and butter will whet your appetite. Entrees include grilled duck breast with sauteed mushrooms and black truffle sauce, and scallops and shrimp in a port reduction with crystallized ginger. Beef, veal, and fish also make appearances in a variety of savory sauces. Don't forgo either chocolate and fruit crepes or profiteroles for dessert.

DOWNTOWN. Enjoy accomplished New American cuisine while gazing out two-story windows and taking in lovely views of the skyline. Boasting striking decor and excellent food, this elegant eatery has it all. As an introduction to the delicious menu, sample beet and endive salad. Then, tuck into dishes like roasted beef cheese steak with cinnamon-spiced herb cream, duck confit risotto with roasted artichokes, and steamed mussels. Prix fixe menu only, 2-5 courses.

COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA. A city presence for more than 50 years, this chocolate shop and tearoom is acclaimed for its rich, flavorful chocolate candies and a painstakingly crafted selection of decadent pastries. The tearoom offers a changing menu of Swiss fare throughout the week, but coffee, tea, pastries, and, of course, chocolates are available before and after lunch. Confections are perfect to enjoy on-the-spot, or pick up a selection to share with a very lucky somebody. Also open Mondays from Thanksgiving through New Year's.

EAST SIDE. Considered by many to be the best barbecue spot in Kansas City, this rustic joint is always hopping at lunch as CEO's and secretaries rub shoulders with cops and construction workers over deliciously tangy fare. Offerings include excellent beef briskets, BBQ ribs, and greasy fries. Perfect place to munch and people watch. Casual attire.
