DOWNTOWN. The Westin Crown Center's signature restaurant is perched on the hotel's top floor. Elegantly appointed with white linens and candles, tables are intimately arranged, conducive to quiet conversation. The restaurant's subdued decor takes a back seat to floor-to-ceiling windows, which afford fabulous views of downtown. American steaks are the specialty, although chops, fish, and seafood are available as well. Rumor has it that Sunday brunch at the restaurant is a treat unlike any other, thanks to dishes like prime rib, made-to-order omelets, fresh fruits and salads, shrimp, caviar, and a host of delectable desserts.

DOWNTOWN. Upon close inspection, you'll likely determine that little has changed about this KC staple since it first opened back in the 1940s. Golden Ox is the quintessential Midwestern steakhouse, complete with "City Slickers"-style ambiance: dark wood paneling, dim lighting, Western-themed decor, and a wagon wheel chandelier. Vegetarians and dieters beware: Black Angus cuts and highly regarded prime rib are king here, and entrées come with large portions of hot vegetables and starchy sides.

DOWNTOWN. Since 1957, this steak fave has been preparing choice cuts over a hickory-wood fire. Great Kansas City strips, filets, and T-bones are cooked to a perfect degree of tenderness and are the reason folks return again and again. The place offers great seafood choices too, including cedar-planked salmon and roasted tilapia. Other perks include an award-winning wine list and exceptional service.

OVERLAND PARK. One of the best reasons to visit Overland Park is to frequent this famous steakhouse, whose attractive setting creates a memorable impression with diners. Stone accents, weathered brick walls, wood flooring, and historic photos of local landmarks and citizens impart a certain hominess that's rare in today's themed steakhouses. Grilled red meat is the specialty, although people not looking for Black Angus can opt for five-spice chicken penne, wood-fired chicken, or grilled barbecued salmon. Reservations suggested.

DOWNTOWN. This much-loved restaurant occupies an unassuming building crowned by a giant cow and serves up excellent steaks at affordable prices. Great beef, pork, and chicken entrees are always available at the popular dining spot, which has been pleasing patrons for more than 60 years.
