WESTPORT. Serving primarily sandwiches, salads, and dips, this eclectic Lebanese eatery fits in well among the other international restaurants along this stretch of 39th Street. During warmer months, the restaurant opens the main dining area's two garage-like doors, leaving the area only semi-enclosed and bringing in fresh air and streetside bustle. Tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanoush, and lesser-known Middle Eastern dishes can be had, and for an extra $10, you can smoke a flavored hookah (apple licorice is popular).

DOWNTOWN. A favorite with downtown's westsiders, Sun Ray Café offers an inventive repertoire of Greek and Mediterranean specialties, placing particular emphasis on fabulous seafood. From trout and mahi mahi to calamari and octopus, chef-owner Yianni Vantzos's innovative menu never fails to impress. Although wine and beer are not served, patrons are allowed to bring their own.

OVERLAND PARK. Yia Yia's means "grandmother," and you can be assured of having food as delicious and confidently prepared as that from your grandmother. The eatery is a study of stone, mosaic tile floors, soft fabrics, and ambient lighting. It also presents a terrific European-inspired lunch menu that draws young, trendy crowds. Specialties include oak-fired pizzas, rustic sandwiches, inventive salads, and bistro dishes like a grilled beef tenderloin with chianti-gorgonzola sauce, pan-seared local trout, and herb-flecked egg noodles with spicy sausage, duck, and mushrooms. Portions are large, but, fortunately, prices aren't. Expect attentive service and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
