DOWNTOWN. This venerable, family-run place has a definite Italian flair, as seen in the decor and the tasty, affordable menu. Breakfast goodies like a zesty omelet with Italian sausage draw crowds to the famous grill, which is well-known for its delicious food. Along with basics like pancakes, hash browns, and eggs, you can also sample a thin, spicy Italian steak and other signature dishes. Come early, or you might be in for a bit of a wait. MARTIN CITY ­ SOUTHSIDE. This carnivore's haven is popular with folks looking for a perfect slab of succulent barbecued beef ribs. SHAWNEE MISSION. Few deny that this eatery serves some of the best Italian fare in the area ­ and at more-than-reasonable prices. Despite the strip mall setting, the restaurant features a surprisingly homey dining area, making it a terrific option for folks in need of a romantic setting for an intimate dinner. Impeccable service, an impressive wine list, and a menu that features grilled salmon with lemon caper sauce and a bevy of "market" seafood specialties combine to make Mezzaluna a truly unforgettable experience.

WESTPORT. This Vietnamese eatery earns high marks for speedy service and handmade dishes. While the rather mundane interior won't knock your socks off, the place is comfortable and free of pretense. Aromas emanating from spicy soups, peanut sauce, spring rolls, and curries beckon to hungry passersby, who are often tempted by specialties like fish with red curry, peas, bamboo shoots, and shrimp. Prices are reasonable ­ another reason folks keep coming back for more. Lunch is take-out only.

GLADSTONE. In a city where everybody and his brother purport to have the "best barbecue around," Smokehouse stands out, thanks in large part to its mouthwatering burnt end platters and its hickory-smoked beef brisket served with fries, Texas toast, and cole slaw.
